Peer Mentor Program

To encourage Weed Warriors to pass on their knowledge and help other classes within their own school communities or schools within their local area become involved in the Weed Warriors program, one class or school may sponsor another class or school. The students help out at the initial classroom session, giving presentations on what they did within their own Weed Warriors program and teaching the new students how to rear the biological control agent. The students from the sponsoring school are also available to answer questions throughout the breeding phase of the program.

Case Study:

The 30 student Murrabit Group School, situated along the Murray River in North Central Victoria in an area where bridal creeper, a weed of national significance, is growing prolific through citrus orchards and native vegetation, sponsored Barham Primary School in New South Wales to start their own rearing program. The students from the Murrabit Group School attended the school and passed on their experiences and technical expertise on bridal creeper and how to rear an insect, bridal creeper leafhoppers, that help to suppress its growth and vigour. The involvement of the Murrabit Group School with their NSW cousins helped to strengthen to the students and local community that weeds do not have or understand borders.
